Lakuba Island Weekend I promised my mom when she was sick that if she got better I’d treat her to a nice little african vacation the next time I came out. My half-baked original plan was to take her to Zanzibar because I’d heard it was nice, with real resorts & real beaches. But Dad had the much better idea of taking her out to the (much much closer) island of Lakuba in Lake Victoria so we did that instead. It turned out amazing. Incredibly quiet, and except for the beautiful resort staff, the oddly polite vervet monkeys and an ancient local fishing village, we had whole island to ourselves. Mom is strong again, healthy and in great spirits. It was a nearly perfect weekend.  View Full Slideshow

Back in Africa! Our safari / “taxi ride” from JRO to Bunda was a lot different this time. We had a new driver, Leonard, who was older and more serious than Mushaka but also more skilled at both the off-road driving and finding us some cool animals. We were destroyed from the plane ride and somehow managed to sleep a few hours on the first day but we didn’t miss much as we took a shortcut through Ngorogoro without going through the crater.  We also took a different path up through the Serengeti and saw way more lions, including a huge pride of 17. The entire safari was captivating once again, but I admit that by the time we reached Bunda, I was really happy it was over and excited to see my family. View Entire Slideshow
